Self-Help

The benefits of therapy can often be enhanced by engaging in activities that promote balance, health, and self-awareness. Some ideas that might be beneficial for you include:

• Keeping a journal of feelings, thoughts, reflections, patterns, etc.

• Writing letters to significant people in your life (and choosing later whether or not to send them).

• Using creative outlets (poetry, creative writing, art, music, dance, etc.) to express your emotions.

• Making conscious changes in your diet, use of substances, exercise routine, or spiritual practices that reflect your personal goals.

• Doing yoga, meditation, or other activities that help you feel connected internally.

• Seeking out healing therapies (massage, aromatherapy, reiki, etc.) that feel nurturing and soothing to you.

• Reading books on the issues you are dealing with in your life. (See recommended titles below.)

Recommended Reading

My opinion of self-help books is that they range from excellent to absolutely horrible. At the same time, I've found that whether a particular book is helpful can depend more on who is reading it than on the quality of the material itself. My suggestion is to spend some time with a particular book before you choose to buy it. Sit down with it in the bookstore and as you skim though it, trust yourself to know whether or not it holds some wisdom for you right now.

Here are some lists of books you might find helpful:

General Emotional Health
Healthy Relationships
Personal and Spiritual Growth
Dealing with Grief and Loss
Recovery from Sexual Abuse
